HOMOSEXUALITY – HISTORY

The Judaeo-Christian revulsion against homosexuality requires further consideration, as the Christian Churches have been one of the strongest influences in society’s condemnation of homosexuality and its persecution of overt homosexuals. The revulsion and condemnation are not based on ethical but on cultic considerations.

It began when, under Moses, the Jews escaped from Egypt and, after long wanderings, took over land in Canaan. Both the Egyptians and the Canaanites had religions in which idolatry and ritual sexual intercourse with male as well as female temple prostitutes were part of the cult. To preserve their exclusiveness as a free people in a hostile land, the Jewish leaders ordered their people to avoid all the ritual of the Canaanites, especially the idolatry and the ritual sexual intercourse. To emphasize their ruling they called such acts abominations (Lev. 18:20, 22; 20:13; Deut. 23:18). The word itself (to’ ebah) means that the practice is to be loathed on religious grounds. Homosexuality was condemned because of its connection with a ritual abhorrent to the Jews, namely idolatry.
