SEXUAL DYSFUNCTIONS
Men and women may have sexual dysfunctions which may cause considerable distress. Women have four main problems. The first is that some women have little or no sexual desire, and consequently fail to become sexually aroused. These women may avoid sexual intercourse or may submit because they feel it their duty, but find it distasteful. Some of the women with this sexual problem are hostile to, or bored with, their partner; others enjoy caring for the man in other ways but avoid any sexual advances he may make. The problem has recently been called ‘inhibited sexual desire’. The second sexual problem is that although the woman has a normal sexual desire, she does not become aroused when sexually pleasured. This means that her^agina lubricates poorly and sexual intercourse may be painful or unpleasant. The third problem is that ,n are so inhibited about sex that when a man attempts to insert his penis into the woman’s vagina, an intense muscular spasm occurs, because of the pain the woman feels. The woman has a normal sexual desire, and becomes sexually aroused but is unable to accept the man’s penis in or near her vagina; the condition is called vaginismus. The fourth problem is that the woman has a normal sexual desire, is easily sexually aroused, but is unable to reach orgasm, at least during sexual intercourse.
