The growth of polyps in the large bowel is not as rare as supposed. It is probably an hereditary condition in which a large number of polyps or little grapelike growths occur in the large bowel, and if not removed are likely to go on to develop cancer. Cancer in the large bowel is now recognized as one of the commonest forms of malignancy.

Though not actually malignant themselves, even if removed, polyps are liable to grow again in the bowel and cause trouble.

Standard treatment for recurring polyps is now removal of the colon in which polyps are growing, and joining up the small bowel to the rectum. Unfortunately, the polyps may then invade the rectum — but here they are more easily removed.

Dr Jerome T. De Cosse M.D., PhD. leads a team of five physicians at the well known Mid-West Cancer Clinic, Vince Lombardi Colon Clinic, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who have succeeded in eliminating or reducing the number of polyps in 5 out of 8 polyposis patients by giving 3000 mg of Vitamin C daily. Reported in Surgery No. 10-1975.

Treatment was 1 gram Vitamin C three times a day in a time-release capsule — 13 months study. ‘Time release’ in order to allow Vitamin C to actually reach the colon — before being absorbed into the blood on the way.

Time release enteric-coated capsules are not yet available in Australia, but a Sydney Pharmaceutical firm, Blackmore’s Laboratories Balgowlah, are currently conducting experiments in their manufacture.

There is another bowel condition, more frequent than was formerly recognized — inflammation of an area of the small bowel with destruction of the lining membrane and frequent perforation of the bowel wall. These patients suffer from very low blood levels of Vitamin C, very like those of scurvy in which the collagen or gluelike cement between cells is dissolved.

Dr John Ryan of Queensland has reported many cases and its successful treatment. He has found that Vitamin B12 given by injection is most valuable in treating this condition, coupled with ascorbic acid.

Supplements of Vitamin C beyond the Recommended Daily Allowance have not been found in these cases to lower the B12 in the blood as has been suggested. This has not happened when cancer patients taking mega-doses of Vitamin C have been tested. It may occur in a test tube but not in the human body.

Protein coated supplements of Vitamin C — at least 3000 mg a day — better 6000 mg — in divided doses coupled with injections of Vitamin B12 may well resolve this distressing health-depleting condition.

These are not slow enough release for the vitamin to reach the colon without being absorbed on the way. True slow release capsules lasting 8 to 10 hours before absorption are more effective.

The infectious diseases to which humans are susceptible can be divided into those caused by bacteria and those caused by viruses.

Bacterial Infections

Bacteria are tiny microscopic one-celled organisms which invade the body and multiply quickly, using up the food supply of the tissue cells and poisoning them by the toxins they produce.

Vitamin C acts like other antiseptics in that it can destroy bacteria or prevent their growth in proportion to its concentration in the blood.

A weak concentration will only inhibit the growth of bacteria or may have little effect — but a strong concentration will actually kill. Vitamin C – ascorbic acid – is, in fact, the most potent widest spectrum antibiotic we have in our fight against infectious diseases.

Moreover, it enhances the action of other antibiotics. Dr Irwin Stone sums up the antibacterial action of Vitamin C as follows:—

1. It will prevent the growth or kill the germs of disease.

2. It destroys and renders harmless the toxins or poisons made by the bacteria.

3. It stimulates the production and activity of the white blood cells, those scavengers or policemen of the body, to engulf, destroy and digest the invading bacteria.

4. It is itself harmless and non-toxic and can be given in the large doses needed to accomplish the above effects without danger or distress to the patient.

Ever since the discovery of ascorbic acid researchers both in the laboratory and in clinical practice have been experimenting with it as a Vitamin. Hundreds of papers have been written describing its effect in such bacterial diseases as tuberculosis, pneumonia, leprosy, typhoid fever, whooping cough, diphtheria, dysentry and typhus.

Their results, describing its effect in both animals and man have been most conflicting.

Only small doses were used ranging from 100 mg a day to 500 mg a day — then considered a large dose. Some few (greatly daring) used several grams. The effects in controlling disease varied with the amounts given and the frequency of the doses. Intravenous injections achieved the best results.

In all cases, however, whatever the dose, there was improvement in general health and sense of well being, even if it did not completely overcome the disease.

Irwin Stone, who has researched all the literature available in many countries on the use of ascorbic acid over the years from its discovery in 1928 until now, has summed up his findings taking the treatment of tuberculosis as his criterion.

He writes: ‘The record of the clinical work conducted on the use of ascorbic acid in the treatment of tuberculosis (and all other infectious diseases) is, indeed, incredible. After thirty years, crucial and meaningful clinical tests at high dosages have still not been conducted. Uncounted lives have been lost; immeasurable suffering endured, time, energy and research money wasted in chasing a will-o-the-wisp by minds looking for a therapeutic effect, but bound by the narrow confines of a vitamin theory. It is unbelievable that so many workers for so long a time could not have suspected the possible reason for their uniform lack of success. To these workers, doses of a few hundred milligrams of ascorbic acid a day were considered “high” because they looked upon it as a Vitamin and not as an Antibiotic.

‘The correct employment of ascorbic acid could relegate the White Plague (and many other diseases) to oblivion.’

Dr Frederic Klenner of Reidsville, North Carolina, was probably the first doctor to use ascorbic acid in doses massive enough to be completely effective in overcoming many viral as well as bacterial diseases and detoxifying or rendering harmless many poisons entering the body from the environment. He has, for nearly 30 years, been treating cases with ascorbic acid at the Memorial Hospital, Reidsville, North Carolina, with such amazing success that the medical establishment find his results incredible.

In any case, it chooses to ignore them. Even such an advanced body as the International Academy of Applied Nutrition of California, when publishing a paper by Klenner in their Journal in 1971, found it necessary to disclaim responsibility for the heroic doses of ascorbic acid described.

Dr Klenner himself shoulders the responsibility gladly, and confounds his critics by stating that he himself takes 10 to 20 grams of sodium ascorbate a day, that his tested levels of blood sodium have always been normal and that he does not suffer from diabetes or kidney stones!

Klenner reports the successful treatment of such bacterial infections as diphtheria, pneumonia, whooping cough, septicaemia, scarlet fever and tuberculosis, and his results are endorsed by other workers.

Irwin Stone suggests that it has been long known that solutions of ascorbic acid in a test tube could inhibit growth of such germs as the staphylococcus, or pus germs, and bacillus typhosis (typhoid fever germs) with 2 parts to 100,000 parts of bacterial suspension or 2 mg per cent.

The diphtheria bacillus and streptococcus and tubercle bacillus needed higher concentrations of the ascorbic acid up to 10 per cent.

Irwin Stone has calculated that if such a concentration as 10 per cent in the body were to be maintained a minimal dose of at least 7 grams each day would be required for a patient weighing 70 kilos.

Ascorbic acid has not only the power to prevent the growth of bacteria and activate the white corpuscles in the blood to destroy them; it also has the ability to kill their poisons which are so dangerous to life — such as in diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw) and the deadly botulism toxin.

Before recognizing it as an antibiotic, ascorbic acid was used in doses of 500 to 1000 mg given every 1 Vi hours to 3 hours in cases of lobar pneumonia with excellent results. Even now when antibiotics are the usual quite effective treatment, ascorbic acid still has a useful part to play in rendering the antibiotics more effective, and in detoxifying any reactions to the antibiotic itself, thus assuring the patient a better chance of survival.

Many doctors are now giving 1000 mg of Vitamin C with every dose of the chosen antibiotic and find that it improves their results.

Some doctors are using far larger doses of Vitamin C to cut short the time of bacterial infections and prevent complications.

Quite unwittingly I myself found that it worked. Our five year old grandson had a bad attack of measles and was threatened with bronchitis. We gave him 500 mg orange flavored Vitamin C tablets to suck after meals, leaving the almost full bottle of 100 on the bedside table. He evidently liked the ‘lollies’ so much that the bottle was empty the next day. He had consumed the lot! I was somewhat alarmed, at first, but his skin was now clear, his cough gone and he seemed perfectly well — and I learned my first lesson in the value of mega-doses of Vitamin C.

From a Brisbane doctor comes this case report — Brisbane — 24/1/78.

‘Do you know that I.V. Vitamin C will break the spasms of whooping cough?

‘A desperate young mother, nerves worn out by sleepless nights, brought her three month old daughter to me after discharge from our largest hospital — diagnosis B Pertussis (whooping cough).

‘Intravenous Vitamin C (through a scalp vein) of 10 grams was followed by a vomit, then the best night’s sleep for six weeks. Child appears almost well today’.

Virus Infections

Even more threatening to the survival of man than war, natural disasters, and nuclear fallout and bacterial infections are the viruses, the smallest and most primitive forms of life, so small that they can only be seen through the highest powers of the electron microscope.

They are ever present, ever ready to enter and attack and multiply in the living cells of our bodies. We have built up resistance to the inroads of some specific viruses in protective anti-bodies in our blood, but the wily viruses have the ability to change their nature from time to time (mutate) to forms against which we have built up little or no protection — and epidemics of virus infections will sweep a community or country or the world infecting thousands and killing hundreds.

An example was the influenza pandemic of 1918 in which more people died than in the Great War which just preceded it. Some virus strains and minor epidemics of new influenza strains arise every year in some part of the world, but we have always with us the viruses of the common cold, influenza, herpes simplex and many so called infectious diseases of childhood.

Our resistance to some viruses such as chickenpox, mumps and measles becomes permanent after one attack, but there are others like the herpes simplex virus and some cold viruses that lurk in the body, especially in the nervous system, latent but ready to come to life and attack their selected cells when stress or some circumstances lower the body’s resistance.

So far no drugs or antibiotics have been discovered to definitely halt or kill viruses as with the bacterial infections — we must depend on the natural and acquired immunity of the individual.

It is of vital importance to find some non-toxic medication that will control the growth of virus in the human body. / believe that we have found it in Vitamin C.

Ascorbic acid used as a medication rather than as a mere vitamin, is a most potent protection against viruses, not only enhancing the production of antibodies against them and activating the white corpuscles in the blood to destroy them, but actually destroying the toxins which they produce.

It must, however, be used in sufficient amounts to effect these purposes.

Dr Frederic Klenner in his over 30 years of experience at Memorial Hospital, Reedsville, North Carolina, has pioneered the use of mega-doses of ascorbic acid in virus infections with the most dramatic results.

‘Effecting a cure when a virus is the offending agent and many times bringing about this change in the space of 24 hours, is a rewarding moment in medicine,’ he writes in the fournal of Preventive Medicine, Spring 1974.

‘Vitamin C treatment must be intensive to be successful. Use veins where practical, otherwise give Vitamin C intramuscularly. Never use less than 350 mg per kilo body weight. This must be repeated for 6 to 12 times, depending upon clinical improvement, then every two to four hours until the patient has recovered. Ice cubes held to the gluteal muscle before and after intra-muscular injections will reduce or eliminate pain and induration.’

The vitamin is dissolved in distilled water (which could contain special dextrose for high doses) or normal saline or in Ringers Solution. The concentration should be 1 gram to 18 cc of fluid. When given by drip into the veins from a bottle for a long period, as must be done sometimes, 1 gram of calcium gluconate once or twice each day should be added to replace calcium.

A pint and a half of milk daily or calcium gluconate tablets will suffice when using the vitamin intramuscularly. Urine tests to make sure the ascorbic acid is spilling over into the urine should be done 4 hourly during the treatment.

Klenner has cured what appeared to be terminal virus pneumonia and virus encephalitis with injections of heroic doses of Vitamin C as sodium ascorbate given intravenously till they regained consciousness, and by mouth as well when the patient was fit enough to drink.

He has also eliminated the lurking herpes simplex virus which lies dormant in the nervous system, but appears any time when resistance is low as an apparently trivial cold sore on the lips.

However, herpes simplex can also infect the eyes, the genital organs and the brain as encephalitis. Daily doses of 7-10 grams of Vitamin C have been found to eliminate the herpes virus from the system.

Dr Kalokarinos’ experience with aboriginal babies and children who died with an apparently trivial head or chest cold is borne out by Klenner’s long experience of such cases at Reedsville Hospital.

They have found that many a sick child admitted to hospital with some such infection should not wait untreated till laboratory results or an extensive examination confirms a diagnosis, when a few grams of ascorbic acid given by needle could save their lives.

These two doctors working at opposite sides of the world and under entirely different circumstances — one in a sophisticated American community and up-to-date hospital — the other with aboriginal children in a small country hospital in outback Australia, have found that adequate Vitamin C for the mother before the birth and for the baby after birth will prevent those sudden deaths of only mildly ill babies commonly known as Cot Deaths.

They believe that a sudden overwhelming virus infection that causes these infants to succumb could be prevented by adequate Vitamin C in their diet and prompt injections. Whatever the diagnosis, it can do no harm.

There are other reports from doctors in various areas describing excellent results giving intravenous injections of ascorbic acid (usually as sodium ascorbate) in more moderate doses than used by Klenner.

Dr B. F. Hart, M.D. of Florida reports a number of viral infections cut short and cured in a few days with intravenous injections of 4 gram ampoules of Vitamin C daily plus an additional 6 grams by mouth in divided doses.

A case of serum hepatitis lost all symptoms in 2 days but because of the seriousness of this disease the treatment was given for full five days. There was no further trouble in a disease that usually lasts for weeks.

An attack of shingles in an elderly lady was cut short by the same treatment but the oral part was extended as the aftermath of neuralgia is often severe and lasting, specially in the elderly. A great deal of suffering can be avoided by cutting short an attack of shingles in its early stages with Vitamin C.

Dr Hart also cut short and cured cases of virus pneumonia glandular fever (mononucleosis) in a few days. Another doctor reports aborting an attack of mumps with large doses of Vitamin C by injection and by mouth.

There is one serious virus disease, encephalitis — often fatal or producing irreversable brain damage — which, with all our modern medications, we seem powerless to prevent or cure. The dramatic results of giving Vitamin C intravenously in heroic doses is so spectacular and encouraging that I am going to quote two cases in full in the hope that more doctors encountering such cases will be encouraged to administer similar life-saving measures — confident that ‘above all, they do no harm’.

As long ago as 1953 Dr Klenner presented a case history and films of a patient with virus pneumonia and showed how prompt massive doses of ascorbic acid avoided a fatal encephalitis, so often the sequel to stubborn head and chest colds.

This patient was unconscious with a fever of 106.8 Fahrenheit when admitted to the hospital. 140 grams of ascorbic acid was given intravenously over a period of 72 hours by which time she was awake, sitting up in bed and taking fluids freely by mouth. The temperature was normal.

Since that time he has observed many cases of a deadly encephalitis striking after a lingering upper respiratory tract infection and cured by massive intravenous doses of ascorbic acid.

He appeals to physicians to recognise the inherent danger of the lingering head or chest cold and appreciate the importance of early large doses of Vitamin C.

The notes of another case of viral encephalitis treated with Vitamin C reported by Dr Hans J. Kugler of Chicago are worth quoting in full:—

‘On Sept. 10a male student, age 21 was admitted to the student health dept. at Urbana, Illinois.

The student was unconscious. Serious. Doctor calls parents in Chicago. Parents give permission for a spinal tap. Student transferred to Carl Foundation Hospital, 611 W Park Street,

Parents drive to hospital.

Spinal tap shows blood in spinal fluid; lots of cells. Also test for kidney function, brain scan and heart. Patient is still unconscious.

Sept. 11: Panel of 3 doctors decide on viral encephalitis. 2 more spinal taps confirm blood in spinal fluid. Indication of broken blood vessels in brain. One doctor insists on preparing the parents for the death of their son.

Later, Sept. 11: the father, Mr. Js. Swimmer, biochemist, insists on giving his son 50 to 100 grams of Vitamin C I.V. One doctor, George Vakur, trained at Mayo Clinic (research oriented) agrees.

In the entire hospital and elsewhere only two 25 gms

I.V. Vitamin C available.

Later, Sept. 11: 50 g Vitamin C is given I.V. to the patient. Within the next 6 hours the signs of life improve. Within 24 hours the patient wakes up.

Sept. 12: Patient takes about 60 grams of Vitamin C by mouth and 20 g I.V. Remarkable improvement.

Sept. 13: Approximately 80 g Vitamin C per day. Further improvement.

Sept. 14/15 further improvement. Released from intensive care.

Released from hospital. Father calls Dr Klenner. Keeps son on 5 to 6 g Vitamin C per day.

After 1 month: examination shows no blood in spinal fluid. Examinations later on show everything normal.

‘I confirmed these data by talking to Mr. Js. Swimmer. Telephone Chicago: 679-8488 or SA2 0126.

‘I also confirmed it by calling one of the doctors on the case, Dr James Worrel, Carl Foundation Hospital, Tel: (2l7)-337-3311. PSL. Father also tells me that the gigantic headaches, normally lasting for months, lasted only 2 days’.

The International Academy of Preventive Medicine reports in their July, 1977 Seminar in San Francisco that special areas of Vitamin C use are dealt with in detail.

Dr Robert C. Cathcart reports on ‘Management of Viral Diseases with Ascorbic Acid’. His clinical research covers a six year period and more than 5000 patients.

During this time Dr Cathcart reports he has not had to hospitalize a single patient with a viral disease, when they took Vitamin C as directed. His experience includes infectious hepatitis, viral pneumonia, mononucleosis, herpes simplex and herpes zoster (shingles) and other common virus disease.

Dr Cathcart is perhaps best known for his development of the Cathcart Orthocentric Hip Prosthesis. Over 6000 of these egg-shaped units have been used, but Dr Cathcart has given up his orthopaedic surgery practice to devote his time to Vitamin C.

Several Australian doctors who have been using mega-doses of Vitamin C as sodium ascorbate for cancer and other cases with most encouraging results, have tried it in the course of their practice to overcome virus disease with

dramatic results.

1. Sydney, March, 1978. A patient in severe pain with herpes zoster (shingles) was given 50 grams of sodium ascorbate (intravenously).

Pain almost completely disappeared, treatment continued 30 grams I.V. on second day and 15 g I.V. on third day. Rash and symptons completely abated at this time. This doctor concludes —

‘If it does this for one viral disease as severe as herpes zoster, how must it benefit other patients who are considered to have untreatable viral infections of many types?’

These cases show in no uncertain way how valuable1— even lifesaving — Vitamin C can be in cutting short and actually curing many virus diseases if it is used fearlessly and in adequate amounts as soon as the disease is recognized.

Chemotherapy is a very broad term which may well include antibiotics, but in popular parlance the latter term is usually reserved for penicillin, erythromycin, and numerous others, obtained from molds, soil bacteria, and other lowly organisms.

There is no doubt that these deserve the title of wonder drugs. Nevertheless they should be handled with discretion: there are many who have found that the antibiotics are two-edged swords. Some people have penicillin or other antibiotic allergy which can be a torture, harassing the body with a red itching rash or intestinal upset. But mankind, whether holding a medical degree or just shopping over the counter, persists in ignoring the fact that any agent, powerful and active enough to do good to the diseased body, can also do harm. The antibiotics have indeed proved themselves miracle drugs, but they are not universally efficient. They will not stop the common cold and the infections which we all get from time to time and call grippe, the flu, etc.

New brooms sweep clean and these new drugs are often more efficient at first than when the infectious bacteria have become used to them. For instance, so many persons have dosed themselves with penicillin to prevent gonorrhea that a “resistant strain” of gonorrhea has developed which will not respond well to penicillin. Then there are certain bacteria and mold-like organisms which habitually dwell in our bodies without doing harm, apparently because they are held in check by the tougher bacteria which cause our usual infections. When the antibiotics have killed off the toughs then the former Caspar Milquetoasts assert themselves and may do direful things to us while we have no way to check them.

The latest and exceedingly popular drugs are the hormones. Thyroid extract was used in the eighteen-nineties. Insulin came along just after the First World War. Since these two hormones have been observed over long periods of time, their virtues and vices are, we believe, well understood. We may almost sanctify them. As to the many other hormones which have been recognized and a number of which seem to have been produced in pure form, I think that I may characterize them by an old New England expression: ”All deacons are good, but there’s odds in deacons.”

One should be exceedingly careful in making definite statements about hormones. Cortisone was no sooner produced than it was modified. Hormones are powerful agents for good or evil. Our knowledge of them is increasing rapidly, which should, of course, make for good, but they are difficult to handle. Presumably they are going to be the drugs of the future.

Catherine Baker, coordinator of Eating Disorders Services at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, is very sensitive to the subject. “At age 14,” she explains, “I developed an eating disorder for a few years because I had been assaulted. Eating disorders help us survive pain. I went through a deep depression. I hope the screening program will help students see that these behaviors hurt their lives.”

Becky Guiffre, a student at the University of Maryland at College Park, became bulimic at age 12. “I would not eat for a few days,” she says. “Then I’d gorge, then vomit 10 to 12 times a day. A specialist looked at the lining of my stomach: No lining was left. I can’t say I never mess up now. But, mostly, I am recovered.”

The National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, estimates that 5 million Americans (nine women for every man among them) have eating disorders. But there are hints of improvement, probably as a result of changes in diet and self-image. The psychologist Todd F. Heatherton and his colleagues from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, report a drop of almost 10 percent in eating disorders at Harvard/Radcliffe, where students were surveyed in 1982 and again in 1992. Still, they found that one woman in 10 reported symptoms of serious eating problems. Their findings appeared in the November 1995 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Dr. David Herzog, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and head of the Harvard Eating Disorders Center, is scientific director of the screening program. “Our culture demands thinness,” he says, “especially among women. If the screenings help us identify symptoms before conditions become full-blown, we can help people back to health much earlier.”

Cold sores are due to the Herpes simplex virus, which lies dormant in the body until it is activated by illness, sunburn, exposure to strong winds, or stress and fatigue.

Clinical features

Your child may complain of an itching or tingling sensation around the mouth, lips or nose, and tiny blisters may appear soon after. These usually crust over in 2-3 days but can become quite painful and interfere with eating and drinking. Cold sores generally disappear after 7-10 days, although some children tend to have recurrent episodes several times a year.

Treatment

Simple cold sores usually clear up without specific treatment. If your child is miserable, some paracetamol in recommended doses, may help to ease the pain. In general, creams or ointments do not help speed up the disappearance of the cold sores. Encourage your child not to scratch the sores, and to avoid kissing other people.

When to see your doctor

• if the cold sores are weeping or starting to spread. This may indicate

secondary, or bacterial infection, and antibiotic treatment may be necessary;

• if your child has a fever in addition to cold sores and is generally unwell

• if you notice sores inside your child’s mouth. This may be due to an initial herpes infection;

• if the cold sores prevent your child from drinking fluids as this may lead to dehydration, especially in younger children.

Prevention

Cold sores are highly contagious, so avoid having your child kiss other people. Avoid direct sunlight and exposure to strong winds.

Making your house safe has two main advantages. Firstly, it decreases the chances of injury to your child and secondly, it lessens the chances of breakages around the house and subsequent anger and frustration on the part of the parents.

When your child is aged about 6 months, just before the age when he becomes mobile, it is a good idea to work your way through the house consciously and systematically and make sure that it is safe for a young child. The checklist below may be useful. You can check off items with a pen as you do them. Do not wait until there has been an accident or breakage — do it now.

• Electrical outlets: put plugs on power points, and curly cords on electrical appliances; install safety switches.

• Cabinets: check kitchen and bathroom cupboards to make sure that poisons and dangerous materials are out of reach, especially those that are sharp, heavy or breakable. Consider locks for the doors of some cabinets, or the purchase of a medicine chest which can be locked.

• Doors: consider door barriers and latches for doors that restrict the child’s access to the outside or to rooms where he can get into trouble.

• Install fire guards, and check heaters and stoves to prevent burns and scalds.

• Place cigarettes, matches, lighters and ashtrays out of reach.

• Check furniture for sharp angles and corners.

• Consider using table mats instead of tablecloths.

• Re-position things that your child can climb on.

• Put away all fragile, breakable and precious objects.

• Safety barriers: put safety barriers on stairs (at the top and bottom).

• Window latches: consider window latches to prevent your child from fully opening them and falling or climbing out.

• Fire extinguishers: consider purchasing a fire extinguisher and have it handy in the kitchen.

• Smoke detector: install approved smoke detectors at strategic positions throughout the house.

• Swimming pool: make sure that the pool has an approved child-resistant fence all around it.

• Gates: make sure all gates around the house have child-resistant latches and/or locks.

• Poisons: make another trip around the house to make sure that all poisons, detergents, dishwashing powders and liquids, medicines, tablets, are safely out of reach. Check the bathroom, kitchen, laundry, garage and bedrooms especially carefully.

• Keep all plastic bags out of reach.

• Take the doors off old fridges in the garage
My interviews indicated that asking about how people were “running” in this regard led to more information than asking how their genitals were working. In “diagnosing” your sexual relationship, ask first if the two of you seem on a “hot” cycle of personal and marital pressure: excessive responsibilities, and feelings of too much to do in too little time, of hyperreaction and agitation.

If you are running hot, your neurohormonal system runs hot too, and the biochemistry of your sexual system interferes with your natural sexual reflex system. These are the hot problems that might result:

All of these “hot” problems are natural responses to daily living styles. There is no reference to lack of orgasm or psychasm in intercourse because the couples reported that coital orgasm was not a major concern. They learned to focus on their feelings and interactions in the general sexual relationship and the interaction between sex and living. Scoring 100 points could mean two things. First, you are completely free of the pressures on American marriage I have discussed. Second, you are cheating on this test! We all have these pressures. The idea is to begin to reduce them to make way for a super marriage.

This test and others you will be taking in this book are based on a scoring system of degrees, not yes or no. All systems, particularly marital systems, change. Just the fact that you are taking a test on your marriage changes your marriage. Score and discuss each item in degrees, trends, indications, not absolutes. It will take some time for you to get used to this type of scoring, but learning to see your relationship as an adapting system is a major step in strengthening your marriage and helping it function in harmony with the rules of all world systems.
